Guest Post: Beatrice's Top Five Secrets to Getting a Guy's Heart

Wednesday, September 3, 2014
Today, I'm delighted to have author Jennifer McGowan here on the blog today to talk about Beatrice from her Maids of Honor series, specifically about Beatrice's top five secrets to getting a guy's heart. I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC of Beatrice's book from Simon & Schuster (you can read my review here) and enjoyed getting to know the maid of deception. I hope you enjoy learning her secrets in this guest post!

Beatrice’s Top Five Secrets to Getting a Guy’s Heart

Kris, thank you so much for inviting me here today! And I loved your blog topic! Beatrice is really put to the test in Maid of Deception, having to beguile young men at stations high and low, and from England to Scotland and back. She has to be at the top of her guy-getting game, in order to serve her Queen and learn the answers she needs—as well as to save her family (and herself). Here’s how she does it!

1. Study the enemy
Just as every battle is different, so is every man. Some like to be flattered, some like to be flirted with, some like to be flat-out adored. So your first order of business is to study the guy you have in your sights. Learn his likes and dislikes, his taste in horses, whether he loves best to feast or to dance. Take whatever time you can to learn his preferences—because then they can then become your strengths.

2. Always stay a fingertip away (but just a fingertip!)
Beatrice is not “hard to get.” She is always in view, always swirling and whirling at the edge of her young man’s attention. But just because she’s close, doesn’t mean she’s caught. Guys don’t necessarily want to work hard to land their quarry, but they still need to feel that there’s a chase involved. So be ever-present, but just outside the circle of your man’s arms.

3. Lend a willing ear (you never know what you might hear!)
Men are a funny lot. They have more stories to tell than you can ever imagine, but they sometimes feel uncomfortable sharing those stories. That’s where you come in. Listening carefully and well to your guy can help you not only get his heart, but can encourage him to depend on you—for friendship and companionship, as much as for love. And if he gets so comfortable with you that he decides to share secrets of his role in the upcoming rebellion, well, you’ve definitely done your job!

4. As long as the music is playing—keep dancing
In the game of love (or flirtation… or spying…) persistence is key. If you’re at first rebuffed by your intended, don’t give up. Men are susceptible to attention, especially attention from a new source. So think of your courtship as a dance. You draw together, you break apart. You circle ‘round, you share a glance, a smile, a nod. But all the while, you remain in the dance with your young man, your interest plain but not forced. Make an effort to ensure he feels that he is very important to you, that your affection is genuine and your smile heart-felt, every time he walks in the room. He’ll begin to look forward to seeing you, and after that, he’ll begin thinking about you even when (especially when!) you’re not around. Once that starts happening, your work is all but done!

5. Never lose your heart (and never let him see you cry)
The absolute worst thing you can do is to lose your heart more than your young man loses his. In fact, it’s preferable (and much more professional) not to lose your heart at all! But if you must crush on your guy, don’t get so addle-brained that you betray yourself. Letting your young man know that you’ve fallen for him can be a recipe for certain disaster. And if he knows he’s driven you to tears? You’re doomed. Beatrice would never admit that she’s broken Rule No. 5 (but she so breaks Rule No. 5… so totally breaks it.)

So for anyone looking to be a spy for the Queen, Beatrice is ready to start your training! Just don’t give her too much of a hard time about Rule #5. ☺

Beatrice Knowles is a Maid of Honor, one of Queen Elizabeth I’s secret protectors. Known for her uncanny ability to manipulate men’s hearts, Beatrice has proven herself to be a valuable asset in the Queen’s court—or so she thinks. It has been three weeks since the Maids thwarted a plot to overthrow the Queen, and Beatrice is preparing to wed her betrothed, Lord Cavanaugh. However, her plans come to a crashing halt as rumors of a brewing Scottish rebellion spread among the court.

Beatrice’s new assignment is to infiltrate the visiting Scottish delegation using her subtle arts in persuasion. The mission seems simple enough, until the Queen pairs Beatrice with the worst of the lot—Alasdair MacLeod. Beatrice cannot help but think that the Queen is purposefully setting her up for failure. But Alasdair could be the key to unlocking the truth about the rebellion….and her own heart. Caught in a web of ever-more-twisting lies, Beatrice must rise up among the Maids of Honor and prove what she’s known all along: In a court filled with deception and danger, love may be the deadliest weapon of all.

  1. The stay "just outside the circle of your man’s arms" made me giggle. Not teasing, not game-playing; just a little flirt and a signal. Very cute guest post!
