Enemy Within

(Vampire Born #2)
by Angeline Kace

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Publication: April 30, 2013 by Accendo Press

Synopsis

Two guys who’ve stolen her heart.
Three races and only one of them worthy.
Countless enemies with insatiable bloodlust for power.
Will one girl's curse ultimately save her?

Half-vampire Brooke Keller barely survived the slaying of her worst enemy, only to learn that Zladislov—the world's most powerful vampire, leader of the vampire world, and her father—wants her dead. However, this time, she's not only fighting vampires but a raging monster within her that endangers what's left of her humanity. And when a deadly disease threatens to take her best friend's life, Brooke tries to convince Kaitlynn to accept a monster of her own: becoming a Zao Duh.

As a former slave to the Pijawikas, Mirko is driven to protect the innocent at all costs, but he has never faced a foe more formidable than Zladislov. And when the Commission bears down on Brooke, Mirko finds the stream of enemies runs deeper than he ever imagined.

Interview with Angeline Kace

Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into writing.
I live in Utah with my husband and three dogs. I work for a CPA firm and just finished my Bachelors degree in accounting. I started writing when I realized I could create that amazing feeling you get when you read a good book by writing. And although it’s more work to get that feeling by writing than it is by reading, I love it!

I saw in an interview that you wanted to write about vampires and werewolves but to make the Vampire Born trilogy from Twilight you took out the werewolves. Why did you choose vampires?
To me it was a no-brainer. Vampires are my all time favorite paranormal creature. For a long time there, I wasn’t reading any books unless they included vampires. Also, I’ve always thought it would be cool to have my own vampires.

Paranormal Romance has a large market. What do you feel is the appeal behind this trend?
I think a lot of people love having real word situations in a fantasy setting. But also, people love how everything is almost more dramatic in paranormal. Not only are the characters dealing with all the problems we face, but now they have to run, fight, live with supernatural creatures.

Brooke finds herself in a new and different world when vampires start coming after her when all she wanted was to have a normal life. How did you go about developing her character while balancing who Brooke is within and who she has to become to survive?
With any story, the author has the challenge of creating the characters to have a arc. So any main character should not be the same person at the end of the book he/she was at the beginning of it. It’s also more challenging to do this in a series. You have to find a balance of making your character grow, but you can’t have them end up in the place you need them to be at the end of the series in earlier books. It’s challenging at times, but I just have to make it work with the situations I throw in front of her and where I want her to go for each book.

There are two hot guys. Where did you find them and what did you enjoy most while writing their scenes?
The guys are one of the fun parts of writing a book! Jaren was everything sweet I liked or have seen in guys. And Mirko was everything I liked in books. He’s been stirring in my mind for a long time. He’s basically my quintessential hot guy!

In your ideal world, how would humans and vampires co-exist?
In an ideal world, they would respect one another and be able to co-exist peacefully. But where’s the story in that, right? In Vampire Born, I really wanted to portray something believable, and I truly believe if there were a faster, stronger race than humans, but was similar in emotions to humans, they would probably see themselves as the more elite species.

How was writing a sequel different?
Writing Enemy Within was different than writing Descended by Blood in a lot of ways. First, there’s the pressure of knowing people are expecting certain things. Then you have the issue of not introducing new story lines that could take up more than you had planned for the series, but balancing the old ones and new ones so that you can still make this book rock, but also leave enough so the final book can rock!

When I wrote Descended by Blood, I knew certain things that I wanted to take place in book 2, but I didn’t know as much going into book 2 and I will know going into book 3, plot wise.

What are you working on right now?
Right now, I’m working on a New Adult book called Wicked Thing. I don’t have the synopsis yet (because I suck at those), but it takes place in college with a guy and a girl who help fix the broken things in each other’s lives. I hope to release it this summer.
