Vi has made her choice between Jag and Zenn, and the Resistance may have suffered for it. But with the Thinkers as strong as ever, the rebels still have a job to do. Vi knows better than anyone that there's more at stake than a few broken hearts.

But there is a traitor among them...and the choices he makes could lead to the total destruction of everything Vi has fought for.

Vi, Jag, and Zenn must set their problems aside for the Resistance to have any hope of ending the Thinkers' reign. Their success means everything...and their failure means death.

Interview with Elana Johnson

Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into writing.
I am an elementary school teacher, have two kids, and love reality television. I started writing in late 2007, after I experienced some hard things in my life. Putting pen to paper was therapeutic, and it allowed me to bleed some of the pain, sorrow, and worry out of myself and into someone else.

What inspired you to write Possession and when did you know it was going to be a trilogy?
Possession was my third book, and I was inspired to write it because I had just read a dystopian novel and LOVED it. I’d never read anything like it, and I wanted to write something in the same vein. So I did!

Possession was intended as a standalone, but I knew it was being developed into a trilogy by August of 2010. I wrote Surrender (the sequel) that September, and Abandon the following fall (2011).

It's wonderful how one idea can inspire another. What has been your favorite part of the writing process?
I love drafting a new novel. It’s so exciting, so full of potential. There’s nothing like beginning a new story, with new characters. My favorite part of the publishing process is seeing my covers for the first time! I love clicking open those emails.

You've been really lucky with your Possession covers. They're gorgeous! I saw in an interview that characters are important to you in a novel. With this mindset, how did you go about developing your characters?
Surprisingly, I don’t plan anything. I am a discovery writer, and my first draft is boring, bland, and all-around awful. I then go through the novel, first working on character voice and motivation. I have to figure out who they are, and why they do things, and let those things drive the plot. I usually do about 6 passes on a novel before I show it to my agent, and then I typically do another 2 or 3 before she thinks it’s polished enough to send out.

So basically, I get all the words down, and then think about characterization and revise revise revise to make it work.

It sounds like lot of work goes into the making of a novel. Zenn or Jag. Who would you rather hang out with for a day and what would you do?
Oh, this is hard! I’d want to hang out with both of them – maybe a half a day each? With Zenn, I’d want him to talk and talk and talk. Maybe we could fly to the city of Harvest, and he could tell me everything about his family, his talents, his motivations.

With Jag, I’d want to hoverboard over the ocean.

These are both fun ideas. I'd be tempted to request half a day with each as well. Would you be a Goodie or a Baddie and why?
Probably a Baddie, because I’m a rebel at heart. If someone tells me not to do something, I automatically want to do it.

Same here. I can't help but imagine doing something when I'm told not to. What are you working on right now?
I am in between projects right now, believe it or not. I’ve recently finished up a major revision on a science fiction novel, and I’m waiting to dive back into my traditional fantasy.

That's exciting to hear! While I love dystopians, fantasy will always be my first love. I'm looking forward to more awesome works from you!
