Cover Reveal - Shadow of the Mark & Giveaway

Tuesday, October 23, 2012
The cover for Carrier of the Mark was gorgeous, and I loved the unique setting and plot of the story. Needless to say, I was really looking forward to seeing what Harper Teen would be doing with the cover for book two. And it's gorgeous, I won't deny it. The dark background and the purple color give an ominous feel to the cover, which goes along with the title Shadow of the Mark.

Synopsis

Life for Megan Rosenberg just got a lot more complicated.

While she evoked the air element, and her feelings for Adam intensified, a web of lies, deceit, and betrayal has been spun around her. With the Order tightening its hold, and the reinstatement of the Mark Knights, Megan has more questions than answers as the Marked Ones grow in strength.

New people arouse suspicion, the DeRises start behaving strangely, and Megan begins to unravel a destiny shrouded in mystery. It's a destiny the Order has struggled to hide, and a destiny someone from the past, far in the past, has already laid claim to.

Alliances will be made, and friends will be lost, as the Order's dark secrets are revealed by the very thing they sought to destroy.

Now compare it with book one:

Yeah, they're pretty similar. After the stunning reception of the Carrier of the Mark cover, apparently HarperTeen wanted an instantly recognizable cover though, which is why they just changed the color scheme. I admit though, while I do love the new cover, I am disappointed that we didn't get to see something new. I'm pretty sure that they could have made some more changes like with the Paranormalcy trilogy, Delirium trilogy, etc. The changes weren't that big, but they were easier to spot than the ones to Carrier of the Mark. It looks as though they just flipped the image and changed the stuff coming out of the dress a bit.

The first cover worked because Megan is the air element. I was expecting to see another element featured on the second cover. It would have been even more epic if we saw, say Adam on the cover, maybe even his siblings, or Megan with some background other than the sky again, a background that is important to the book (maybe one showing multiple elements clashing or working together). Or maybe a hint of the 'shadow' to come.

What do you think about the new Carrier cover?

Leigh started out life in South Africa. A year later her parents moved home to Dublin, Ireland. Giving up lions for sheep, she grew up in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains where she went to a convent school and had to contend with uniforms, gabardines, and nuns. When not dodging the beady glare of the Sisters of Mercy, she was devouring every book she could get her hands on.

She traveled all over Europe while working in banking and treasury, but she gave up her calculator in favor of a keyboard and hasn't stopped writing since. Her first book, Carrier of the Mark, was published by HarperTeen in 2011.

Her home is in Cork in the south of Ireland, but she is currently on loan to Massachusetts in the US where she continues to write books about magic, ghosts, and romance, with a bit of Irish flavor.

  2. I'm pretty disappointed, too. :/ I love the color scheme and everything, but this cover just screams 'effortless' to me because it's SO similar to its prequel! However, I still think it's beautiful. :)

    Thanks for sharing, Kris!

  3. I agree. It's beautiful, but they could have done better after the amazing work they did with the first cover! The colors of the covers also don't match really well, though the dark scheme does work for the idea of Shadow of the Mark.
