Second Loves
Amy Garvey
Love. It sounds so simple and joyful, on the surface – “They’re in love!” “Love makes the world go round.” “All you need is love.” But love is also one of the messiest, most confusing, terrifying, and crazy-making things in the world.
I think that’s why Wren and Gabriel grabbed me – COLD KISS is all about Wren learning to let go when her very beloved boyfriend is killed in a car crash (and she subsequently brings him back to “life”). I couldn’t imagine meeting a new boy in the midst of that process, and finding herself confused all over again. Danny is the one she loves! The only boy she’ll ever love! Right?
Wrong. The good/bad thing about love is that it doesn’t work that way. There is no gray area as stormy and murky and grayly gray as love. For Wren, coming off her first ever relationship, and one that ended tragically, loving someone else seems not only impossible but completely wrong. Because if she loved Danny so much that she brought him back to life, showing even a glimmer of interest in another boy has to be the worst possible betrayal in the history of girlfriends, right?
Not really. Gabriel doesn’t and can’t replace Danny, but he’s not supposed to. What Wren finds with Gabriel is something completely other than what she had with Danny. And that was one of the hardest and best things to write when I was working on COLD KISS – the idea that love isn’t always a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I LOVED this post and your take on love!
ReplyDeleteEspecially how each love is different, how it's confusing and messy.
And what I totally loved was this: "And that was one of the hardest and best things to write when I was working on COLD KISS – the idea that love isn’t always a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
This is both hopeful and hard to accept - because everyone what's a soul mate, but what if you don't "get" yours or if you lose the one you think is your soul mate.
Cold Kiss sounds aweseome! Thanks so much:))
Actually, I think your post is the best advice to get over the heartbreak and guilt of losing someone you thought was the one. It really provides hope
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of second chance and second loves.
ReplyDeleteI know this has been out for a few months now, but I haven't had the chance to read it yet. That being said, I'm still so interested in the idea of a more emotion-driven story, rather than action and all that.
ReplyDeleteThank you both for the post & giveaway! :)
This sounds like a great story...nothing like having your heart torn in two

Is it weird that books about love tend to make me cry? It's a good kind of cry though. Maybe it's just me...
